Not Taught: An Irreverent, Relevant, Bold Wakeup Call from Jim Keenan

I get asked to review more books than I can possible get to, but when the one and only Keenan launched Not Taught: What It Takes to be Successful in the 21st Century that Nobody’s Teaching YouI immediately headed to Amazon to grab a copy.

If you don’t know or follow Keenan (yes, he has a first name, but no one uses it), you should. In a sea of  sameness, he stands out. Keenan is a one-of-a-kind sales and leadership guru. He’s a consultant, entrepreneur, provocateur, ski instructor, Forbes columnist, and now book author. Never boring, and aside from his trademark red plaid shirt and PG-13 language, utterly unpredictable. And his fresh, fun perspectives and take-no-prisoners style are the reasons why I love the man. Keenan’s also a huge Patriots and Bill Belichick fan (and my personal fantasy football nemesis), but we won’t hold that against him.

KeenanWhile pondering how to title this post, I discovered Jill Konrath’s endorsement on Not Taught’s back cover: Irreverent AND highly relevant. In his own inimitable style, Keenan kicks your butt as he show you what’s needed to be successful in today’s world.” Perfect! What better way to describe both Keenan and this book – irreverent and highly relevant. In 15 punchy chapters and 150 pages that take no longer than a few hours to ready, Keenan delivers both a giant wakeup call and a prescription for relevance in today’s every-changing, content-driven, uber-connected business world

It’s such a fast and such a good read that I don’t want to be a spoiler by offering too many specifics in this review. However, what I am compelled to share is how absolutely meaningful and on-target its focus is. If you’re in any way lost or confused about what it takes to stand out, get noticed, create content, or build a following then Not Taught is for you. I was amused and impressed to see David Meerman Scott’s powerful endorsement of this book because it was David Meerman Scott who delivered this exact same wakeup call to me just six years ago! I had been ignoring the rapid growth of social media and indifferent to the fact that I didn’t even show up in a Google search of my own name. Hearing Meerman Scott speak scared me to the point of action. I realized that if I had any intention of remaining a top-performer, or ever dreamed of changing jobs or building something for myself then I needed to wakeup and get serious about building my online presence and personal brand. In a fresher, bolder, simpler and more action-oriented fashion, that is exactly what Not Taught can do for you today!

Do you want to become or stay relevant? Viewed as a thought leader or expert? Hoping to create a following? Heard enough about the importance of creating your own content but not sure where to start or what to do? Are you over 30-years-old, less than 75 and fearful that the world is passing you by? Have you recently thought or said, “I just wish someone would help me get caught up with all this new stuff and show me what to do?”  If you answered yes to any of those questions, stop reading this right now, head over to Amazon and grab Keenan’s book. You’ll thank him and me later.
